Introduction Fall 2015

My name is Aakash Jivan and I am 20 years old. I was born in Roseville, California and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2007. My mom’s name is Jayshree, my dad’s name is Rajesh, and my sister’s name is Anandi. I also have a pet rabbit named Kokoa. I enjoy spending time with my family whenever I get the opportunity to. Under the text is a picture of my family and I. Since moving to Oklahoma I have been accepted to the University of Oklahoma. My majors at the University of Oklahoma are Biology and Pre-Medicine. After I graduate I plan to go to medical school and achieve my dream of becoming a physician.

I enjoy a variety of activities in my spare time. One of my favorite things to do is to play sports. Every year I am apart of intramural sports at my school including basketball, football, soccer and volleyball. I enjoy sports a lot because it appeals to my competitive nature and also helps me stay in good shape. Another activity I like doing in my free time is listening to music. I am a fan of rap, hip-hop, and R&B. I am a huge fan of Drake. I have every album he has released and have been to a concert of his. In my opinion he is the greatest artist of my generation. Additionally, I enjoy volunteering in hospitals and clinics. This gives me an opportunity to give back to the community while also learning interesting information about the profession I plan to enter.

I did a lot of fun activities over summer break. The two most fun events were my cousin’s wedding and a lake trip with my family. At the wedding I got a chance to catch up with friends and relatives that I have not seen in a long time. I also got to see my older cousin extremely happy as she married her soul mate. The lake trip with my family was also enjoyable. At the lake I went jet skiing for the first time in my life. It was very exciting to speed across the water, and to jump waves.

  1. Hey Aakash! Kokoa is super cute. If you have pictures of him close up or just hanging out, I’d love to see them. I was also born in California, but my family packed up and moved to Las Vegas in the early 90s. I see you like Drake. What are your thoughts on Kendrick Lamar? I think, “To Pimp a Butterfly” is a masterpiece, if not the best record of 2015. I’m glad you enjoyed your summer and hope your fall classes aren’t too rough on you.

  2. It sounds like you are very busy and active person! I don't play any sports, but I work with athletes, so I appreciate people that are able to play them and keep up with everything else in their lives haha. That's great that you spend a lot of time volunteering - it's really admirable.

Your bunny is also really cute!

  3. Oh, your rabbit is so cute, Aakash! There is someone else who is really into rabbits; she works at a rabbit rescue in Blanchard... let me see if I can find the post; here it is! This is Kristen who is in Myth-Folklore: you can see her rabbit Ty-Ty here:
Tywin Golden Gate Vanilla Thunder Lannister
    And more rabbits here:
    Heartland Rabbit Rescue, Blanchard
And your summer sounds wonderful! As you will see, weddings and the epic "swayamvara" (bridal choice/contest) is a big theme in the epics... weddings have always been a big deal, thousands of years ago and today too. I hope you will enjoy the class!

  4. Hi Aakash! It sounds like you must stay really busy with all the sports you're in, but it must be a nice break from the stress of classes. Your summer sounds pretty similar to mine: I had a few weddings to go to and my family took a visit to the lake near our house. I've never been on a jet ski but your description really makes me want to try it out!

  5. Hi Aakash!
I absolutely love that you have a pet bunny! I tried really hard to get my mom to let me have one after they let me take care of the class rabbit in middle school during winter break but alas, it was not something made reality. My mom is very particular about having animals since she's so clean and picky about the house. I'm also a Biology major and Pre-Med! I feel like it's a very rewarding field! Your summer sounds like it was a blast, I always love connecting with family whenever I can.

  6. Another fellow Pre-med! You must know how stressful the pre-med life is! It amazes me that you're so involved in several activities. Keep that up! It really makes you a well-rounded person which will definitely impress any medical admissions board.Your pet bunny is too cute! Does Kokoa mean anything? Do you plan to move back to California? I wish you luck on your pre-med path!

  7. California to Oklahoma is a crazy move to make! I actually just got back from California last week, but I was in Los Angeles. It is a completely different world over there, and I'm sure it took some getting used to once you moved to Oklahoma! I loved it there though, I would never be in a bad mood if I was able to wake up to perfect weather and the beach everyday. I'm a huge Drake fan too! I have never been to any of his concerts, and I'm dying to go see him in Austin for Austin City Limits, but I unfortunately can't miss work. I'm sure he'll be back around sometime soon though!

  8. Hi Aakash! I find it funny that we’re in the same class! Especially since we have several mutual friends- Tobin says hi! :) I think it’s pretty cool that you are also Pre-med and wanting to become a physician! I also like Drake’s music, so I can definitely appreciate your love for him! Your rabbit is so cute! My sister also got married this past summer- Indian weddings are so much fun! I’m so jealous you got to go jet skiing, I’ve always wanted to! Hope you have a good semester and good luck in all your future endeavors!

  9. Aakash, it sounds like you get outside a lot. How often do you play intramural games? I played volleyball with friends every Thursday a couple summers ago. Roseville, CA must have been a great place for outdoor activities. It is so close to Lake Tahoe and the California National Parks! I had the chance to go to Lake Tahoe this summer, so we drove right past Roseville. Northern California really is a beautiful place. Good luck with school this year. I'm sure you'll be busy with Biology and all your sports!

  10. That sounds like an awesome summer! I have a friend who is a pre-med major, so I know how busy it can be! But if you're volunteering and liking the profession, I'm sure you'll do great! I've always wanted to live in California and I visit the state a lot because I love it so much, so I can't imagine moving away from there!

I also used to have a rabbit as a pet and they are so precious. Mine was way smaller than the one in your picture, though! It looks so cute! Good luck with this semester!

  11. Hi Akash, I also had a pet Rabbit named Tutu! Sadly, I had to give it away when I moved. I like your sister’s name. It is great that you enjoy sports and play intramural sports. We have the same major. I bet this class probably is a good break for you from all those science classes you have to take.

  12. Hi Aakash,
It sounds like you are keeping busy with your major, keep up the good work and get into medical school. It is awesome that you have the time to take part in sports, school, and volunteer. It is nice to see that you spend time with your family. Is Kokoa’s name pronounced just like cocoa? Good luck getting into medical school!

  13. That is so awesome that you have a rabbit. I work at a pet hospital so I see a lot of dogs and cats, but not a lot of rabbits! Jet skiing sounds amazing. I have only been tubing and knee-boarding. Jumping waves sounds much more fun. Keep up the good work as you make your way to your dream!

Your rabbit is so cute; he looks so comfy in your arms! I wish you the best of luck in pursuing your passions, and look forward to reading more of your writing.

  15. Hey Aakash! I am also a huge fan of sports. I haven't played in a while because I can never seem to find the time but I used to all the time. I think that it is great that you volunteer. It always feel good to be able to help out your community and I definitely think that it will help you to become a better physician. Good luck with this semester! I hope it goes well for you!

  16. Hey Aakash! I don't think I've ever actually seen your blog before so it's nice to see that someone else has chosen the same background as me! Also I think it's awesome that you have a pet rabbit, it's super cute! I envy your free time! I haven't been to the lake in like two years! I would love to go to the lake on a nice sunny day right now!

  17. Hi Aakash! I admire your aspiration to attend medical school--I'm in my last year of undergrad here at OU and I'm definitely already feeling burnt out. I can hardly imagine going through the whole process again! Also, it's really cool that you keep involved with sports! I danced in high school, and have always wanted to play intramurals, but haven't gotten much of a chance so far! I'm hoping to change that next year though when I do an extra lap for my master's. Sounds like you had a great summer, I hope the semester has gone just as well! Best of luck for the last few weeks here!

  18. Hey Aakash! That's awesome that you want to eventually end up in medical school to become a physician, I am a biomedical engineering major myself so I find that really cool! Sports are a great way to relieve the stress from school, I played lacrosse for 4 years here at OU and it was great. Good luck with your career path in the medical field and enjoy the rest of your semester!

  20. That's awesome that you are so active. What are some of your favorite sports to watch? and favorite sports teams? I am a huge thunder fan. I like the Dallas Cowboys but it has been a struggle. That's a bold statement saying Drake is the best out of any artist. You are going all in. That's cool that you can stand behind an artist like that.
