READING DIARY A: SITA SINGS THE BLUES

This week I have decided to experience another form of the Ramayana. I thought it would be interesting to check out the story in the platform of a movie/musical. In this form of the story there are four different ways that are utilized in the movie to tell the Ramayana. This movie is by Nina Paley and is called “Sita Sings the Blues.” One of the ways includes a group of friends talking about the Ramayana, another is a musical version of some of the main events, another can be compared to a cartoon version of the Ramayana, and the last is a modern twist to the Ramayana also in cartoon form. It is cool how the author intertwines each of these different stories into the main plot and makes it flow so well. No I know why you have heavily recommended it. In this version of the Ramayana, they portray Ravana more nice and virtuous than in the Public Domain Edition of the Ramayana.  The modern cartoon form deviates the most from the plot while still containing similar elements such as Sita not feeling loved after Rama rescues her, or a couple being separated. Watching half of this movie has helped me recap on the Ramayana, and it has given me more ideas for different ways to write the story. Three ideas I have come up with are what if Sita stayed back at the kingdom and did not go with Rama on his journey, what if Sita just went back with Hanuman when he came to the Lanka, and what if Sita gave into Ravana and became his queen.

This is a picture of the cover of "Sita Sings the Blues."
